Bioload (biological load)
The total amount of organic waste produced by living organisms in an aquarium. Excessive bioload overloads the filter and leads to the accumulation of toxic substances.

The bioload is the sum of everything that produces waste in the aquarium: fish, invertebrates, corals, uneaten food, decaying plants. Every living organism contributes to the biological load through respiration, excrement and metabolism.
The bioload is proportional to the size of the fish, not to their number. One 30 cm Oscar produces a biological load enormously higher than ten Neons. The "one centimetre of fish per litre" rule is an extreme simplification that does not take into account the metabolic differences between species.
A bioload that is too high for the capacity of the biological filter produces accumulation of ammonia and nitrite. Symptoms are cloudy water, unpleasant odor, fish breathing heavily, and test values that are out of range.
The bioload management capacity depends on the volume of the aquarium, the efficiency of the biological filter, the frequency of water changes and the presence of plants (in freshwater aquariums) or the skimmer (in marine aquariums).
Adding new fish should be done gradually. The biological filter needs time to expand the bacterial colony in response to the increased load. Adding too many fish at once produces an ammonia spike that can be fatal.
Nutrition directly influences bioload. Overfeeding is like adding extra fish to the system. All uneaten food becomes organic load.
In marine aquariums the skimmer is the main ally for managing the bioload. Removes organic compounds from water before they decompose. An aquarium with an oversized skimmer tolerates a greater bioload.
