Automatic dosing (dosing pump)

System of peristaltic pumps that automatically dose additives into the aquarium at programmed intervals. Fundamental to maintain stable parameters in the reef.

Dosing pumps are among the most important equipment for a mature reef aquarium. They dose small, precise quantities of solutions at regular intervals, keeping parameters stable without manual intervention.

In marine aquariums the main applications are the dosing of calcium, KH and magnesium (balling method), the dosing of trace elements (strontium, iodine, potassium) and the dosing of amino acids or bacteria.

Dosing pumps work with a peristaltic mechanism: a roller compresses a hose, pushing the liquid forward. They are very precise (error less than 1%) and allow you to program doses from 1 ml and above.

The most used models are GHL Doser, Kamoer, Jebao DP and Coral Box. They are chosen based on the number of channels needed (from 1 to 4 or more), the precision and the possibility of programming.

Calibration is essential. Each pump must be calibrated by measuring the volume actually delivered and adjusting the software accordingly. Calibration must be checked periodically because the tubes wear out and the flow rate changes.

The peristaltic tubes must be replaced every 6-12 months. A worn tube loses elasticity and the flow rate progressively decreases.

The golden rule is to dose little and often. Better 10 doses of 5 ml distributed in 24 hours than a single dose of 50 ml. Parameter fluctuations between one dose and another are the main cause of problems.

Balling solutions are prepared by dissolving the salts in osmosis water following the manufacturer's recipes. Concentrated solutions last for weeks. Always check that they do not fall.
