Hardscape

The set of rocks and wood that form the supporting structure of the aquatic landscape. The foundation on which to build aquascaping.

Detailed explanation

Hardscape is the skeleton of aquascaping. It includes the rocks and woods that define the shape of the landscape.

The most used types of rock in freshwater aquariums: Seiryu (grey with white veins), Dragon Stone (ochre with holes), Frodo Stone, Lava Rock.

The most used woods: Redmoor, Spider Wood, Manzanita, Driftwood. They all release tannins that colour the water yellow.

New wood floats. They can be saturated in a bucket, fixed with stainless screws or glued to a stone base.

The composition follows the rule of thirds. In marine aquariums the hardscape is made up of the live rock that form the structure for the corals.

Gluing the rocks together with super glue gel prevents collapse.
