Aquaponics
System that combines aquaculture and hydroponic cultivation. Fish produce fertiliser for plants, plants filter water for fish.
Detailed explanation
Aquaponics is an integrated system where aquarium water is used to irrigate plants grown outside the water.
The cycle: fish produce ammonia, bacteria convert it to nitrates, plants absorb nitrates, purified water returns to the fish.
The best plants are lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, strawberries. The ideal pH is a compromise: 6.8-7.0.
Home aquaponics can be as simple as a small aquarium with a planter in the back.
