Nano reef

Small volume marine aquarium (30-80 litres) with corals and invertebrates. A fascinating challenge that requires compact equipment and frequent maintenance.

Detailed explanation

The nano reef is the miniature version of the reef aquarium. Aquariums ranging from 30 to 80 litres with corals, small fish and invertebrates. It is the entry point for many enthusiasts who want to approach the marine world without the investment of a large aquarium.

The advantages are obvious: low initial cost, reduced space, possibility of positioning on a normal piece of furniture. AIO (All In One) formats such as Fluval Evo, Innovative Marine, Waterbox Peninsula Mini have integrated filtration and are ready to use.

The challenges are amplified by the volume. Evaporation in proportion is much greater than in a large aquarium. One litre evaporated in a 40-litre nano aquarium changes the salinity by 2.5%. An ATO is almost mandatory.

The temperature fluctuates more rapidly. A nano aquarium near a window can have excursions of 3-4 degrees in a day. The position and any mini-chiller must be considered.

Water changes must be frequent: 10-15% twice a week is the minimum. In a nano, nitrates and phosphates can rise quickly.

The corals suitable for the nano reef are soft and LPS. Zoanthus, Mushroom, Ricordea, Euphyllia, small Acropora if the lighting is adequate. Modern compact LED ceiling lights (AI Prime, Kessil A160, Ecotech XR15) provide sufficient spectrum and power.

The fish should be chosen from the smaller species: Amphiprion ocellaris (only one in small nano aquariums), Gobiodon, Trimma, Pseudocheilinus hexataenia. Be careful not to overpopulate: one or two small fish are the maximum for a 40-litre nano aquarium.

The nano reef is an excellent training ground for learning reef fundamentals before moving on to larger aquariums.
