Lead in aquarium

Highly toxic heavy metal. It should never be present. Deadly for invertebrates and fish even at very low concentrations.

Detailed explanation

Lead is one of the most dangerous contaminants in aquariums. It is toxic to all aquatic organisms and has no biological role.

Sources of contamination include: old lead plumbing pipes (still found in historic buildings), lead weights used to anchor plants (those sold in stores are coated but can oxidise), lead solder on DIY equipment, uncertified decorations.

In the aquarium any detectable concentration of lead is too high. ICP analysis is the only way to detect it. If present it should be treated as an emergency: massive water changes, activated carbon, resins for heavy metals and above all immediate identification of the source.

Lead plant weights should be replaced with stainless steel alternatives or ceramic weights. Many experienced aquarists categorically refuse any piece of lead in the aquarium.

Reverse osmosis water removes lead from tap water, eliminating the risk associated with old plumbing.

In freshwater aquariums lead is equally toxic. Plants can absorb it from the substrate with negative effects on growth.
