Mangroves in aquarium

Mangrove seedlings grown in the sump or aquarium with submerged roots and emerged leaves. They absorb nitrates and add a unique natural element.

Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia) are plants that grow naturally in tropical coastal areas with their roots in salt water and their foliage in the air. In aquariums they are used as a natural filter and as a unique decorative element.

They are grown with the propagules (elongated fruits) inserted into the sump substrate or in special trays above the aquarium. The roots grow in water, absorbing nitrates, phosphates and heavy metals. The leaves remain above the water level.

Growth is slow. Don't expect quick results in nutrient absorption. Mangroves take months to develop a significant root system. In the meantime, macroalgae and water changes for nutrient management continue to serve.

Mangroves require bright light for their emerged leaves. An LED plant grow light placed above the sump works well. The aquarium light alone is not enough because the leaves are out of the water.

Fallen leaves must be removed. If they fall into the aquarium they decompose, releasing tannins and organic compounds.

The aesthetic aspect of mangroves is the main reason why many grow them. A sump with mangroves, macroalgae and a small warm light is a spectacle.

They work in both seawater and freshwater and brackish water. In nature they live in the transition zone between sea and land.

Don't expect mangroves to replace your filtration system. They are a complement, not a substitute.
