Detailed explanation
The pH probe is a glass electrode that measures the difference in electric potential between the solution and the internal reference. The reading is continuous and more precise than drop tests.
The probe must be calibrated monthly with pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 (or 10.0) buffer solutions. Two-point calibration ensures accuracy across the entire range.
Connected to a controller (Neptune Apex, GHL ProfiLux) the pH probe allows: alarm if the pH drops or rises too much, automatic shutdown of the CO2 if the pH drops too much (in planted freshwater aquariums), control of the calcium reactor (in marine aquariums).
pH probes last 12-24 months. Signs of aging are: unstable reading, loose calibration, slow response.
Store the probe in KCl storage solution (never in distilled water, never dry). The glass membrane must remain hydrated.
