Zinc in the aquarium

Essential trace element in minimal traces for enzymes and biological processes. In excess it becomes toxic, especially for invertebrates and corals.

Zinc is a trace element that is needed in minimal quantities for the functioning of various enzymes. In natural sea water it is found at concentrations of approximately 0.5-2 ug/l.

In the aquarium, sources of excess zinc are: galvanized pipes in domestic plumbing, metal decorations, galvanized bolts and screws used to secure rocks, and some low-quality foods.

At high concentrations (above 10-20 ug/l) zinc becomes toxic to corals and invertebrates. The symptoms are similar to those of other metal contamination: corals that do not open, failure to grow, mortality of shrimps and snails.

It is measured exclusively with ICP analysis. Treatment in case of excess involves water changes and high quality activated carbon. Identification of the source is essential.

In freshwater aquariums, zinc is included in some plant fertilisers as a microelement. Plants need trace amounts of it for photosynthesis but an excess is also toxic for fish.

The best prevention is to use only certified aquarium materials and carry out periodic ICP analyzes to keep heavy metals under control.
