GH booster
Product to increase the total hardness (GH) of water. Essential for remineralizing osmosis water for freshwater fish.
Detailed explanation
GH (General Hardness) measures the concentration of calcium and magnesium in water. Osmosis water has zero GH and must be remineralised.
The most used products: Salty Shrimp GH+ (GH only, ideal for Caridina), Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ (raises both, ideal for fish), Seachem Equilibrium (raises GH only).
The target GH depends on the inhabitants: Caridina 4-6, Neocaridina 6-15, tropical fish 5-15, African cichlids 10-25.
GH influences the moulting of shrimp (calcium and magnesium are needed for the new exoskeleton) and the health of plants (magnesium is essential for chlorophyll).
Reference values by aquarium type
| Aquarium type | Recommended range |
|---|---|
| Tropical freshwater | 5 - 15 dGHFor most tropical fish |
How it is measured
GH drop test (API, JBL, Sera).
What happens when it is too low
Moulting problems in shrimp. Plants with magnesium deficiencies. Stressed fish.
What happens when it is too high
Some softwater fish suffer (Discus, Cardinals). Caridinas do not tolerate high GH.
