Iwagumi

Minimalist Japanese aquascaping style using only rocks and turf. Zen aesthetics with precise rules of composition.

Detailed explanation

The Iwagumi uses exclusively rocks and low grass, without wood or stem plants. The rules require an odd number of rocks arranged according to a precise hierarchy.

The classic carpet uses HC Cuba, Glossostigma, Eleocharis or Monte Carlo. They all require bright light and CO2.

The challenge is the apparent simplicity. From a technical point of view it requires 100-200 PAR, CO2 to 30 ppm, balanced fertilisation.

Algae are the enemy of Iwagumi. The Dry Start Method reduces the risk. Suitable fish are those that do not disturb the carpet.
