Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus)

Large, intelligent South American cichlid. Recognizes the owner and interacts with him. Requires huge aquariums.

Detailed explanation

Oscar grows to 30-35 cm and needs at least 300-400 litres. It is a predator that eats everything that fits into its mouth.

It is one of the most intelligent aquarium fish: it recognizes the owner, follows the movement of the hands, and can be trained to accept food from the hand.

Parameters: pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 24-28 degrees. Companions must be large and robust: other large cichlids, large plecos, catfish.

Varieties include: Tiger Oscar, Red Oscar, Albino, Lemon. They produce a lot of organic waste: filtration must be generous.
