The biggest problem with plecos is size. The common Hypostomus plecostomus grows to 30-40 cm. It is totally unsuitable for aquariums below 300 litres.
Ancistrus (Bristlenose, max 12-15 cm) are the ideal choice. Otocinclus (max 4 cm) are excellent but delicate algae eaters.
Ancistrus accept bleached vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and reproduce in the aquarium.
Many plecos are nocturnal and need wood in the aquarium: they scrape it and cellulose is part of their diet.
